Do your deck building homework
Let’s get one thing straight right from the beginning. Just because a contractor says they can bring your idea to life doesn’t mean they will actually do it – or be able to do it. That’s why doing your homework comprises not only of visualizing the best deck for your house, the materials, dimensions, etc. but also of looking around for the most trusted decking company.
First of all, you may want to rely on someone with a beautiful deck or porch. Even if you choose contractors other than recommended, you will get insight on how the process works. However, an opinion from one or two people should not be enough to make a decision. In this case, we encourage you to check out online forums where you will come across dozens of deck building stories.
Good communication is the key to the deck of your dreams
Once the search is limited to a few contractors it’s time to make some phone calls. Discuss availability, contractors’ experience, and license. Some decking companies, like Koval Porch and Deck Builders, may even offer a free estimate of your idea. You might want to call the references to validate the contractor’s claims.
When all is good, the next step is meeting in person and doing a talk-over of the project. It is then when you can fully evaluate the company (and they can evaluate you, too!). Remember to ask all the questions that come to your mind, e.g. the cost, payment terms, securing the proper permits, company’s familiarity with the chosen material, will there be subcontractors involved etc.
Communication is the key to success, that’s why all the parties should be clear about their expectations. And, most importantly, remember – if you live in Chicagoland, you have already found the best decking company!
